- Type I glass has a low coefficient of expansion and thus is resistant to heat and cold. This glass is chemically inert and highly resistant to chemical substances and thermal shock. They are perfect for packaging parenteral medications, non-parenteral medications, and injections.
- Type II glass is unaffected by water and more chemically inert than type I glass. However, its melting point is lower. Containers made of type I glass are used for parenteral and non-parenteral preparations.
- Type III glass has moderate hydrolytic resistance and chemical resistance. This type of glass is not very tolerant to sudden temperature changes. Therefore, it can crack. Companies use packaging materials made from this type of glass to package solids and moisture-less preparations, such as powders and tablets.
- Type IV glass is used to make packaging for products meant for topical or oral use.
